Over-the-Top Kitchen Renovations That May Devalue Your Home

A $30,000 kitchen renovation may be appealing if you love gourmet cooking, but an expensive kitchen remodel may be a detriment when it comes time to sell your home. While a kitchen island and restaurant-sized stainless-steel appliances like refrigerators and stoves may be “must-haves” for you, potential buyers who don’t care much about cooking and spend little time in the kitchen won’t want to pay for them. They will be more likely to pass on your home and buy one with a no-frills kitchen.

This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do anything to upgrade your kitchen. There are several affordable ways to improve the look and convenience of your kitchen. Here are some project ideas:

  1. Install retractable trash bins and pull-out shelves in your cabinets.
  2. Paint your cabinets. Your may want to consider applying a bright accent color.
  3. Decorate your backsplash with ceramic tile.
  4. Install laminate or vinyl flooring.
  5. Upgrade to quartz or granite countertops.

Creating a Functional Home Office

Many people currently work from home, either for their employer or for themselves. Your home office should be attractive and functional and reflect your interests and personality. You may want to decorate your office in a manner to blend in with your home, or you may want an entirely different look. Here are several ideas to help you create a productive, inviting and fun space.

  • Use green plants or flowers to add color and create ambience.
  • Choose colors for your office accessories (e.g. tape dispenser, stapler, binders) to match the wall color and artwork in the room.
  • Add a blackboard, corkboard or whiteboard to post calendars, motivation messages and reminders.
  • Paint the walls with a color that appeals to you and enhances the space. Add a decorative screen, curtains or fabric for an attractive backdrop.
  • Add a colorful area rug if you work in a room lacking in architectural character or in a basement.
  • If you have space, add seating for meetings and visitors.
  • Designate a comfortable spot for pets that won’t interfere with movement in the room.
  • Have a basket or container with paper, crayons and games for your children to keep them busy while you are working.
  • If possible, place your desk in front of a window. Consider adding anti-glare fixtures for computer work, multiple task lights and ambient lights.
  • Paint your file cabinets in a color that blends in with the room. Alternatively, you can use stackable wicker or wire file baskers in place of file cabinets.
  • Add bookcases, cabinets and shelving over your work area for frequently used items.
  • Use dual-function furnishings (for example, an armoire that houses media equipment and stores files).

Adding personal touches to you home office will make you happier, prevent a feeling of isolation and spark creativity. You’re the boss of this project, so have fun decorating!

Spring Gardening – Tips for Planting and Maintenance

Homeowners inevitably come down with “spring fever” once the weather warms up after a long cold winter and begint thinking about new planting. Here are some tips for creating and maintaining your garden during the spring:

  • Prevent insect problems with strategic planting. Lawns, fruit trees and vegetable plants require full sun during the day. Reserve shady spots for shade-oriented plants.
  • Prepare vegetable beds and rows by loosening the soil and mixing it with organic matter.
  • Plant grapes and berries in late March or early April. If you are thinking of planting blueberries, make sure the soil is acidic and has good drainage.
  • Divide and plant perennials. Water after planting and on an as-needed basis.
  • Prune fruit trees every year to maintain their productivity and shape. Remove crowded or shaded branches as fruit-rot and leaf-spot pathogens thrive in dark, damp areas.
  • If the temperature drops toward freezing, protect your plants with straw mulch or spun-bonded fabric.
